What is Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC)?

Pediatric palliative care is a comprehensive approach that addresses the physical, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of children with life-limiting conditions and their families. Our goal is to fill their lives with LIFE.

How is Pediatric Palliative Care different from adult palliative care?

Paediatric Palliative Care Pediatric palliative care often spans many years, and must adapt to the ongoing physical, emotional, and psychological development of the child. It is a dynamic, evolving process.

How many children need PPC in Spain?

About 60,000 families in Spain need pediatric palliative care, yet only 15% currently receive adequate support. In Madrid, approximately 3,500 families need it, with coverage reaching 30%.

What is the scope of Fundación porqueViven?

We currently support families in the Madrid region and Aragón, and collaborate nationally to promote PPC through training, advocacy, and coordination with other entities and volunteers.

What services does Fundación porqueViven provide?

What is your relationship with public health services?

At Fundación porqueViven We ensure the home can remain the primary place of care, providing psychological, and spiritual support, therapies, respite care, financial assistance, orthopedic equipment, and more.

Are the children you support also treated in the public health system?

Yes, always. Families are referred to us through their public paediatric palliative care teams at the Fundación porqueViven

Are you part of public PPC teams, like the UAIPP at Hospital Niño Jesús in Madrid?

No, the professionals of the Fundación porqueViven coordinate closely with public teams (such as the UAIPP) to maximise the use of resources and improve care for families.

Do you only serve families from Hospital Niño Jesús (Madrid) or Miguel Servet (Aragón)?

No. Any patient receiving Paediatric Palliative Care can be cared for by Fundación porqueViven. We coordinate closely with public teams (like the UAIPP) to maximize resource use and improve family care.

Are public healthcare resources insufficient?

Public teams provide excellent care — especially in Madrid, with 24/7 coverage. However, family needs go beyond standard services. We provide complementary resources not included in the usual public PPC portfolio.

What is the CAPPIPPCC)?

CAPPI(PPCC) will be Spain’s first comprehensive Pediatric Palliative Care Center, opening in Madrid in 2026. It will complement public healthcare with additional resources for respite care, therapies, and family support.

How many children will CAPPI (PPCC)serve?

Initially, CAPPI(PPCC) will accommodate 30 children for respite care, expandable to 60 if needed, plus 24 day center beds and 4 family apartments for end-of-life care.

When will CAPPI(PPCC) open?

The center is scheduled to begin operation in mid-2026, supporting and complementing the public healthcare system in Madrid.
